About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join DJAARA in a parental leave position for up to 12 months, supporting the implementation of the Bakaru Wayaparrangu Agreement (2024) with Agnico Eagle at the Fosterville Gold Mine, east of Bendigo.
As Environmental Coordinator, you will help ensure mining operations meet best-practice environmental standards while reflecting the expectations of the Djaara Community. You will bring together environmental science, regulatory knowledge, and Traditional Owner perspectives to protect and heal Country.
This role suits an environmental professional who is values-driven, confident in their expertise, and committed to working respectfully with Traditional Owners, industry, and government.
What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Implementation Coordinator, you will:
- Represent DJAARA on the Joint Implementation Committee, supporting strong environmental outcomes.
- Develop and implement environmental management and conservation strategies, including pollution control and rehabilitation of impacted land.
- Advocate for best-practice environmental standards and DJAARA expectations.
- Provide expert advice on environmental risks, impacts, and mitigation strategies.
- Participate in environmental impact assessments and collaborate with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices.
- Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations while identifying opportunities to strengthen environmental protection.
- Integrate Traditional Owner knowledge with contemporary environmental practices to support healing of Country.
- Seek guidance from internal DJAARA teams and technical experts to ensure decisions are culturally informed.
- Stay up to date with current research and industry best practice to strengthen DJAARA’s environmental management approach.
What will you bring?
- Degree in environmental science, natural resource management, or related discipline.
- Experience in environmental management, ideally in mining or resource-related industries.
- Understanding of environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
- Ability to identify risks, analyse complex issues, and make informed decisions.
- Experience designing and managing environmental monitoring programs, and preparing clear reports.
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build respectful relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Genuine passion for advancing Traditional Owner rights and supporting the healing of Dja Dja Wurrung lands, waters, and skies.
