DJAARA was announced Telstra’s Business of the Year, and winner of the Indigenous Excellence category at the Telstra Best of Business Awards Gala event held at Melbourne Park on Thursday evening.
DJAARA, the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, is the representative body for Dja Dja Wurrung People – the Traditional Custodians of Central Victoria.
Established in 2004 to uplift and empower Dja Dja Wurrung People, the Corporation has grown into a multi-million-dollar organisation that includes three enterprises: DJANDAK – (natural resource management and design), DUMAWUL (creative arts and cultural tourism), and DJAKITJ (bush foods).
Dja Dja Wurrung Group CEO Rodney Carter said it was a great honour for DJAARA’s work and achievements to be recognised through the award.
“To be recognised at a national level by such a high-profile national business is very rewarding – especially considering that, twenty years ago, Dja Dja Wurrung People were virtually invisible in our own Country.
“What really fills my heart is seeing the difference our work is making. Today, our art, our Culture, our language and our People are being re-embedded across Country, including in major civic buildings.
“My People walk taller, and have more opportunities to participate in the Dja Dja Wurrung community and society more broadly. “We are shifting the dial – not only for Dja Dja Wurrung People, but also for other First Nations across Victoria and Australia.
“DJAARA has always been focused on navigating systemic barriers, building bridges, and finding ways to do things the Dja Dja Wurrung way.
“As well, we are creating a range of benefits for the wider community in Central Victoria – through economic stimulus, sharing our Culture, and improvements to the natural and built environment.
“I am deeply grateful for the passion and dedication of our Members and staff and the exceptional leadership of our Boards, which has enabled us to achieve so much,” Mr Carter said.
Thanking Telstra for their support for small and medium business, Mr Carter said the Telstra Best of Business Awards provided an opportunity for Australian enterprises to share, to shine and to reflect on their achievements. He also thanked the other finalists at the awards ceremony.
“Thanks to all businesses for your participation in these awards. By participating, we are all winners, and we are all richer for it.”
