Message from Cassandra Lewis
Acting Dja Dja Wurrung Group Chief Executive Officer
As we close 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an extraordinary year
for Dja Dja Wurrung People and for DJAARA. This year brought two historic milestones: the
passing of Australia’s first Statewide Treaty legislation and the formal apology by the Victorian
Government for the enduring harm caused by colonisation and discriminatory policies.
The Treaty Act, signed into law on 30 October, is more than legislation—it is a recognition of
our sovereignty and a commitment to a future built on truth, justice, and self-determination. For
generations, our People have fought for this moment. Treaty establishes a permanent,
independent framework to hold governments accountable and ensures that decisions
impacting our communities—on health, housing, education, and Country—are made with us,
not for us.
On 9 December, the Victorian Government delivered an apology acknowledging the violent
history of colonisation and its lasting impact: the taking of land, the removal of children, the
silencing of language, and the denial of self-determination. This apology is a vital step in
healing, but words alone are not enough. It must be followed by action—action that honours
truth-telling and drives meaningful change.
At DJAARA, we stand ready to lead in this new era. We will continue to advocate fiercely for
our People, protect Country, and ensure that the promises of Treaty and Apology translate into
real outcomes for our communities. Our vision remains clear: a future where Dja Dja Wurrung
People thrive culturally, socially, and economically, grounded in our enduring connection to
Country and culture.
As we move into 2026, let us carry forward the strength of our Ancestors and the hope of our
future generations. Together, we will make this new chapter one of justice, respect, and shared
responsibility.
