Mayam Mayam means ‘housing’ in Djali (Dja Dja Wurrung language).
DJAARA is committed to providing secure, quality, affordable and culturally safe homes and services which protect and support Djaara (Dja Dja Wurrung People).
Mayam Mayam was developed through a deep understanding of the culture, needs, experiences and aspirations of Djaara. We recognise that our mob need support in different ways to secure a home. These needs will change over people’s lifetime. We are driven by a desire not just to provide homes wherever they are needed but also to build communal and family wealth for future generations.

Strategy

The need for a Mayam Mayam strategy cannot be disputed. The historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation have created a situation of social disadvantage for Djaara and Aboriginal People more generally, which has made it very difficult for many to access safe, secure and appropriate housing.

Safe, affordable and secure housing is essential for Djaara to secure the state of health and economic well-being we all deserve. This strategy reflects Djaara experience and outlines DJAARA’s vision and plan for ensuring the availability of safe, appropriate housing for Djaara on Djandak.

The strategy lays out the pathway for MAYAM MAYAM to become a fully operational housing provider. Our goal is to build and manage a portfolio of social and affordable housing that meets the needs of our community.

We will do this by:

  • Investing DJAARA’s land and capital in new housing development
  • Pursuing government funding and partnership opportunities
  • Building MAYAM MAYAM’s capacity in housing delivery, renter management, and community support

In the interim, we will:

  • Partner with values-aligned housing providers to secure allocation for DJAARA Members
  • Advocate for increased Aboriginal housing investment across Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country)
  • Support DJAARA Members to apply for existing housing programs

Victorian Housing Register (VHR)

To ensure you can access housing opportunities when they become available, you must register with the Victorian Housing Register (VHR).

What is the Victorian Housing Register?

The Victorian Housing Register (VHR) is a centralised system that helps people access affordable housing options across Victoria. When you register with the VHR, you’re letting the government know you need housing assistance.

How does it work?

Once you register, you’ll receive a VHR number. This number is your reference in the system and allows you to apply for housing opportunities as they become available.

Members are encouraged to register for FREE via the Victorian Housing Register (VHR). Once you are registered with the VHR, you will receive a VHR number. This is essential to be considered for any housing opportunities. Do not lose your VHR number.

Housing Opportunities

DJAARA is actively working to address housing needs of Dja Dja Wurrung People through multiple partnerships and programs.

Burnayi Lurnayi – YWCA Australia Partnership

In partnership with DJAARA, YWCA Australia is delivering Burnayi Lurnayi (young women) in Bendigo – a $20 million development providing 35 new social housing dwellings designed with the unique needs of women and families at the centre.

The development includes 26 apartments (one and two-bedroom) and 9 three-bedroom townhouses. At least half of the homes are prioritised for First Nations women.

Designed with input from Dja Dja Wurrung women, Burnayi Lurnayi honours the importance of women in our community and provides safe, secure housing where young women can establish themselves, become financially independent, and participate fully in society.

Due for completion in mid-2026, DJAARA will keep Members informed as the project progresses and provide information about how to apply for these when applications open.

Federal Government Home Ownership Scheme

There is also a Federal Government Home Ownership Program that provides assistance with a deposit, allowing eligible homebuyers to purchase a home sooner with a lower deposit. While this scheme is not specifically targeted towards First Nations Peoples, it may be an option worth exploring.
