Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate and Community Centre
The Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (trading as DJAARA) and its enterprises have moved to our new Corporate and Community Centre.
Located at 43 Hattam Street, Golden Square, the Centre is a permanent base for Dja Dja Wurrung People to practice, strengthen and share Culture, as well as office space for around 100 staff.
Larnangurrak is also a venue for arts and Cultural events, and a multi-purpose space that can be used by other businesses and the wider public in future.
A Place To Call Home
Larnangurrak, the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate and Community Centre, is a long-standing Dja Dja Wurrung aspiration.
It is a place of learning and interaction. A place that honours the survival of the Dja Dja Wurrung People. A place where we can celebrate and share our Culture, heal our People and improve community wellbeing. A place from which we can realise economic opportunities and become self-sustaining.
Professor Mick Dodson planted the seed for the creation of a Dja Dja Wurrung ‘cultural hub’ when reviewing the Dja Dja Wurrung Recognition and Settlement Agreement, in 20XX.
After an eight-year-long search for an appropriate site, DJAARA found the old Golden Square High School – decommissioned and laying empty.
In 2022, DJAARA received the official title to the parcel of land for its corporate and community centre. At a celebratory event on-site, then Attorney General Jaclyn Symes handed the physical title to then Chair of the DJAARA Corporation, Trent Nelson.
“It’s an honour to return this land to the Traditional Owners, the Dja Dja Wurrung people, recognising their tireless fight for land justice,” said Attorney General Jaclyn Symes.
DJAARA held a traditional garni (digging stick) ceremony to mark the start of construction in 2023 – the same year DJAARA also celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Recognition and Settlement Agreement. The RSA recognises Dja Dja Wurrung People as the Traditional Owners of the land of central Victoria.
Momentously, in November 2024, Larnangurrak opened.
A place for the whole community
Larnangurrak not only creates the opportunity for Dja Dja Wurrung People to meet and practice Culture, and for DJAARA to have a corporate home, it has brings tangible benefits to the local community.
We look forward to welcoming the community, which may be through events, through spaces such as the theatre and conference room, and the open spaces that are part of the site.
Thanks to the Victorian Government for supporting this important project, providing generous funding for the build.
