DJAARA is seeking a Field Services Development Officer to join our team—a role where you’ll be protecting Cultural Heritage and ensuring it is nurtured and preserved.

How can you make an impact?

This position calls for someone who understands the significance of Country and Culture. You’ll play a crucial role in leading and mentoring our casual cultural heritage field team. With your guidance, the field staff will be empowered to carry out their work with pride, ensuring our sacred places are protected and respected. Your work will support our responsibilities as a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) and help us maintain a strong relationship with the community, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

This is a designated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander position. In this role you will.

  • Provide support and guidance to our casual field staff, helping them grow in their roles and ensuring they are well-prepared to carry out their duties in a respectful and safe way.
  • Conduct field inspections, ensuring that cultural sites are cared for and that all activities follow our cultural protocols and legal obligations.
  • Lead and oversee inductions for field crews, ensuring everyone working on Country understands the importance of the work they’re doing and the cultural responsibilities they carry.
  • Work closely with the broader community, liaising with sponsors, project proponents, and public groups to ensure our cultural heritage is understood and protected.
  • Ensuring that all work on Country aligns with cultural heritage laws and policies will be a key part of your role.
  • Help monitor activities to ensure our heritage is safeguarded.

What will you bring?

  • A strong connection to Dja Dja Wurrung Country and an understanding of how important it is to care for our land and cultural heritage.
  • Experience in leadership and mentoring within a cultural heritage or similar field, with a commitment to nurturing the skills of others.
  • Knowledge of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and cultural heritage management processes.
  • A commitment to Aboriginal self-determination, working in a way that respects the rights and voices of the Dja Dja Wurrung people.
  • The ability to build respectful relationships with community members, stakeholders, and external groups.
  • Experience with fieldwork, including site inspections and compliance monitoring.
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to communicate with respect and understanding in all interactions.
