Wurreka Galkangu: Walking together to heal Country is the story of Dja Dja Wurrung People working together with DJANDAK, DJAARA and our partners at Bush Heritage Australia to leave healthier Country for future generations.

DJAARA and Bush Heritage began working together almost 2 decades ago when Bush Heritage started managing a number of conservation reserves on Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country) in north-west Victoria, including Buckrabanyule, Nardoo Hills, Lawan and Bellair.
The partnership has deepened over the years, and the film tells the story of what is possible when we genuinely walk together – combining cultural knowledge and conservation science to heal Country.
The reserves support remnant patches of many threatened vegetation communities such as box-ironbark woodlands, grassy woodlands, heathy woodlands and mallee shrublands. They provide last chance habitat for Squirrel Gliders, Swift Parrots, Malleefowl, Hooded Robin, and support plants such as Buloke and native orchids.
Over the last 175 years or so, mining, weed infestations, inappropriate fire regimes, intensive agriculture and changed land use has pushed many of these ecosystems, plants and animals to the brink.
In recognition that Traditional Custodian knowledge is needed to deliver the strongest outcomes for Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Wurreka Galkangu ensures that Dja Dja Wurrung voices are central in decisions about Bush Heritage-managed reserves.
In 2025, we launched the co-developed Wurreka Galkangu Shared Strategic Landscape Plan 2024–2034. The plan guides the management of Bush Heritage reserves in the region, helping enhance, and minimise threats to, the biocultural values that are integral to the health of Dja Dja Wurrung Country.
