Mayam Mayam Ltd is currently inviting expressions of interest from individuals who possess the necessary qualifications and experience to serve on the Board of Directors. Candidates who can contribute their expertise and demonstrate strong leadership to guide Mayam Mayam Ltd in achieving its objectives. There are up to three vacancies for Independent Directors and one vacancy for a Djaara Member Director.
Overview
The Dja Dja Wurrung people have established a corporate entity, the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate Group. In general terms:
- The Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (DDWCAC), trading as DJAARA, is focused on formal representation and implementation of Dja Dja Wurrung rights, interests and obligations, including via the Recognition and Settlement Agreement and the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. DDWCAC employs all staff and holds all assets; and
- Mayam Mayam Ltd is committed to providing secure, quality, affordable and culturally safe homes and services which protect and support Djaara (Dja Dja Wurrung People).
Mayam Mayam Board Purpose
DJAARA has established the following four key objectives for this housing strategy;
- Improve the health and social well-being of Djaara by providing secure, safe and affordable housing that meets Djaara’s needs.
- Promote economic empowerment for Djaara through access to housing that is close to employment, including those who are employed with DJAARA.
- Increase asset and wealth accumulation opportunities for Djaara through increasing access to home ownership – both household and collective.
- Enhance cultural connection for Djaara, enabling mob to live and work on Country.
Board Functions
To oversee the development of housing projects that generate long-term housing solutions for Djaara, the Mayam Mayam Board will:
- Provide organisational leadership and advice.
- Oversee operations of the Businesses, including their accountability and control mechanisms.
- Ensure the operation of appropriate systems of risk management and internal control, codes of conduct and legal compliance in relation to the Businesses and provide reports to the DDWCAC Board of Management.
- Propose the annual Mayam Mayam budget and business plan for approval by the DDWCAC Board.
- Provide input into the Dja Dja Wurrung Group corporate strategy and annual business plan.
- Formulate and maintain oversight of key policies and procedures.
- Promotion of the organisation (Business development, fundraising and outreach).
Desired Skills and Capabilities
Mayam Mayam Ltd is seeking specific skills that will support their business units, including:
- Significant expertise in the construction/project management of residential housing.
- Significant experience in the not-for-profit community housing sector
- Significant expertise and experience in managing and operating residential housing stock.
- In addition, specialist expertise in the following areas would be advantageous.
- Develop and implement due diligence frameworks.
- Risk management
- Accounting, Finance and Investment
- Governance and reporting
- Contract management.
- Business-to-business networking
- Strategic business planning
- Marketing
- Entrepreneurship and business development
- General operational management
- Specific industry expertise
Appointment
Mayam Mayam is seeking to appoint up to 3 Independent Directors and 1 Djaara Member Director.
These appointments to the Mayam Mayam Ltd Board will be made by the DDWCAC Board for a period of three years.
Meetings and time commitment
The board of directors typically meets six times a year. The meetings may be held online or in person in Bendigo (or at alternate locations on occasion), usually on a weekday between 10 am and 2 pm.
Preparation time is required to review meeting papers before each meeting.
Board members may be asked to attend special events or meetings, or to serve on committees, as determined by a consensus of the Board.
Expectations of board members
- Attend and participate in meetings regularly, and special events as able.
- Participate on a standing committee of the board and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary.
- Be alert to community concerns that can be addressed by DDWCAC and Mayam Mayam mission, objectives, and programs.
- Help communicate and promote the DDWCAC mission and programs to the community.
- Become familiar with Mayam Mayam finances, budget, and financial/resource needs.
- Understand and comply with the policies and procedures of the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate Group
