DESCRIPTION:The bayikina (reawakening) of Dja Dja Wurrung language is essential to the cultural foundation of Dja Dja Wurrung People and DJAARA.  \nFor many generations\, Dja Dja Wurrung Ancestors have communicated and shared their languages with clans and other language groups who travel long distances for ceremony\, trade\, hunting\, fishing\, and gathering.  \nStories from the mission period recount our old People being punished for using Dja Dja Wurrung language and customs in their everyday life. Through the years\, Dja Dja Wurrung language\, words\, and traditions have survived through Dja Dja Wurrung People’s dynamic and determined connection to Country and Culture.  \nToday\, on International Mother Language Day\, we acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung People of the past who passed on these words to the collectors in the 19th century. SUMMARY:Culture of place: Bendigo and the big build
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the La Trobe Arts Institute for a ‘mini-marathon’ of inspiring and informative presentations exploring the development of the architecturally significant ‘Big Build’ projects that are shaping the future of Bendigo’s city centre. \nSignificantly\, these large-scale civic\, educational and government projects have been created in close consultation and with leadership of DJAARA (Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation) including creative collaborations with Indigenous artists\, designers and practitioners from the Bendigo region. \nThe event will reveal the process behind this vital Indigenous leadership with a presentation from Rebecca (Bec) Phillips\, a Dja Dja Wurrung artist developing works for Galkangu Bendigo GovHub and Bendigo Law Courts Development\, who has been involved in the cultural consultative process from early on. Following her presentation\, Bec will be joined by Anne-Marie Pisani\, ASPECT Studios to further illustrate this working relationship on the landscape architecture elements at the Law Courts. \nIt will also include keynote architect-led presentations on the Galkangu Bendigo GovHub designed by Lyons\, Bendigo Law Courts Development designed by John Wardle Architects (JWA) and the Bendigo TAFE Revitalisation Project\, recently completed by Architectus in partnership with Six Degrees. \nVictorian State Government Architect\, Jill Garner (OVGA)\, will open the event\, followed by the presentations and a panel discussion moderated by Stuart Harrison – Open House Board President – providing an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the presenters. \nA self-guided walking map will be provided online and to all talk attendees so that they can walk the circuit and view each site from the street (where projects are in construction). \n  \nPresentations + panel discussionSaturday 22 October1.30–3.30pm\nLa Trobe Art Institute\, 121 View St\, Bendigo VIC 3550Bookings required$5 commitment fee\, general adminFree for students and concession \nBuy tickets here \n

SUMMARY:Bendigo Botanic Gardens Visitor Hub Opening
DESCRIPTION:DJANDAK was engaged to provide cultural input into the design of the new Visitor Hub section of the Bendigo Botanic Garden including the built form\, planting palette\, language place names\, education and gathering spaces and interpretive signage. The Kapa Gatjin (Knowing Water) advisory group explored the project brief and provided significant cultural input into these aspects of the project and generously shared their cultural knowledge to help develop a new Djaara cultural landscape for the whole community to enjoy. \n  \nThe City of Greater Bendigo will official open The Botanical Gardens Central Hub (Larni Garingilang) on behalf of Mayor\, Cr Andrea Metcalf on Saturday 8th Oct\, 2022. \n  \nLarni Garingilang (meaning home of growth in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung is an exciting $7M cultural precinct that features: \n\nA new café/function centre building with community rooms\nNew gardens with over 15\,000 local indigenous plants\nGathering and educational spaces\nWetlands and ponds\nStormwater harvesting system\n\n  \nThe project has been funded by $3.75M from the Victorian Government – Building Works package\, $1.75M from the Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program\, $550\,000 from the Department of Environment\, Land\, Water and Planning and $1M from the City of Greater Bendigo.  A further $10\,000 contribution from Friends of the Bendigo Botanic Gardens assisted with the design of the project. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Dan Sultan\, Briggs and Kee’ahn lead the line-up for this year’s edition of Treaty Day Out. \nThe festival will be held at Victoria’s Bendigo Showgrounds on Dja Dja Wurrung Country on October 1. In addition to Sultan\, Briggs and Kee’ahn\, Treaty Day Out boasts a lineup of entirely First Nations artists\, featuring performances from the likes of No Fixed Address\, Marlon X Rulla and Scott Darlow\, among others. \nRounded out by additional line-up acts Nooky\, Madi Colville Walker and Bumpy\, the festival will be hosted by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria\, an elected body which represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the state’s Treaty process. \nSpeaking of the event\, which will also host an array of cultural activities and food amenities\, Amy Rust of First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria said that Treaty Day Out “is a way for us to share our culture and to invite Victorians on the Treaty Journey with us.” \n“The work we’re doing is monumental\, but this is an opportunity to come together\, reflect on how far we’ve come and to have fun with mob. Our culture\, our music\, is deadly and we want to share that and to celebrate it all\,” Rust said. \nTickets to Treaty Day Out are free for First Nations people who are involved with the Assembly\, and are otherwise available for purchase.
